Creating a WebQuest

Hello everyone! Today I will be sharing our English Language Teaching Material Ufuk and I created using a WebQuest. A WebQuest is defined as “an inquiry-oriented online tool for learning. It is a lesson in which most of the information that students explore comes from the Internet. Students go on an online quest and explore and analyze new information that is given via the world wide web.” (Renald, 2016). A WebQuest or, in general, technology-enhanced language teaching materials help learners improve their 21st-century skills as well as critical thinking skills. As 21st century teachers, we should encourage our learners to use technology effectively with the help of these types of fun and challenging tools.

Ufuk and I used an English prep-class book to design our tasks, and we selected the “celebrities” topic since we thought our students would find it interesting because of their age groups and interests. Yet, our tasks can be applied to different age groups and levels. We assigned our students to do some research about the celebrities they have chosen with the links we have provided them on our WebQuest and prepare a PowerPoint presentation for their classmates. We used a website called quest garden. The website requires a paid membership, but it also allows you to try its features for one month for free. The interface of this website was easy to understand and use both for the teachers and the students. Ufuk and I did not experience any problems with this website while creating our WebQuest tasks.

The only thing I would criticize is that it is not a website where you can design your tasks very colorful or unique like Canva. Yet, I believe learners would find it very motivating to use since they will click so many things and go to many websites, unlike the worksheets we have designed using Canva.
