Creating a Grammar Teaching Video for a Flipped Classroom

Güncelleme tarihi: 21 Haz 2021

Hello everyone! Today I will be sharing the simple past tense grammar teaching video Ufuk and I created using the Flipped Classroom Approach. The grammar teaching video was specifically designed for a high school preparatory class but can be applied to/ adapted for various elementary-level students.

In my previous post where I shared a vocabulary teaching video Ufuk and I created, I talked about what the Flipped Classroom Approach is and what its advantages and disadvantages are. Make sure to check that post as well.

Now I want to share our experiences while creating the simple past tense grammar teaching video. Ufuk and I did a lot of Zoom sessions to create our grammar teaching video as well as the vocabulary teaching video. For the grammar teaching video, we used the prep-class student’s book that was assigned to us as a guide. We mostly selected example sentences for the video from that book since the students would be familiar with the vocabulary and the usages of the simple past tense in the book and we selected different example sentences to use in the worksheet since the purpose of the worksheet is to apply what the students have learned from the video. We wrote the transcript of the video first and shared the parts equally to record our voices. We used a video-maker website called Powtoon this time, in addition to the Photos application in Windows. Powtoon requires a paid membership to be able to use all its features but it provides you with a 4-day free trial. This website allowed us to do more in terms of visuals, effects, animations, etc., than Windows’ photos application. Yet, it did not let us create a video longer than 3 minutes while in the trial, so we had to use the Photos application in addition to Powtoon. Powtoon looked a bit complicated to use at first since it has so many features to explore, but when we got used to it, it helped us a lot creatively. One of the problems, while we were using Powtoon to create our video, was that we could not add two different voice recordings (one of mine and one of Ufuk’s) at the same slide. We could only add one recording at the beginning of a slide. Therefore, we had to use Windows’ photos application again to add our voices into the video. After we finished creating our grammar teaching video, we prepared a worksheet using Canva. I like Canva a lot and use it in my presentations and various assignments because it is practical and provides you with numerous templates you can work with. You can create presentations, infographics, worksheets, posters, and so many more.

After everything, I can surely say that our experience creating a grammar teaching video was so much fun since we got to use various tools and get creative. Ufuk and I both agreed on using the Flipped Classroom Approach in our future classes, thanks to these beautiful experiences. Now let me share our works below:
