Creating a Vocabulary Teaching Video for a Flipped Classroom

Hi everyone! Welcome back to my blog! Today I will be sharing the 5th-grade health unit vocabulary teaching video Ufuk and I created using Flipped Classroom Approach.

What is a Flipped Classroom Approach?

Flipped Classroom Approach is a pedagogical approach in which traditional classroom teaching and homework elements are reversed. For example, the teacher assigns students to watch a pre-prepared teaching video at home as homework so that they can focus on the practical activities during the lessons.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a Flipped Classroom?

The students will learn at their own pace since they can slow down or fasten the speed and watch the video as many times as they need. Moreover, they will have an access to the video whenever, wherever they want and they will be able to use their learning styles and all of these will motivate them intrinsically. The only disadvantage of this approach might be that it requires a lot of work for the teacher if the teacher wants to create his/her video rather than using other ones’. Yet, a teacher can create a video and use it for years since he/she will be teaching the same thing over and over. So it is safe to say that, the advantages of this approach outweigh its disadvantages.

Our experience Creating a Flipped Classroom Video:

Ufuk and I used a website called Vimeo when creating the video for a flipped classroom. Although this website has helped us a lot, it had a lot of lacks. For example, it did not allow us to use our voice recordings so we had to use the Windows photos application to edit them into the video. Vimeo requires a paid membership to be able to use all of its features yet it provides us with a 1-month free trial. This creating process was challenging at first since we were not familiar with this approach and video editing programs but when we understand the approach and saw its advantages and get used to the editing programs/websites, it was a lot of fun. We believe that this approach can improve our teaching experience and the students' learning experience since it requires both the teachers and the students to use 21st-century skills and most importantly we believe that it will encourage students to use English outside of the class. In addition to that Ufuk and I prepared a worksheet using Canva where students match the given pictures with the correct vocabulary. The teacher can use this worksheet during the lesson so that the students can apply freshly learned vocabulary in practice.

Additionally, we have prepared a Kahoot quiz to test the students' vocabulary learning of the Health unit while making them enjoy the process. The teacher can use the code below to play Kahoot during the lesson and create a stress-free, fun, and encouraging learning environment.

Here's the code to our Kahoot quiz: 336 2413

That is all I've got for this post. Check Ufuk's blog here: https://ufukphlvn.wixsite.com/thestpg

He has such informative and fun posts! Stay tuned, see you in my next post! Peace! :)
